Jennifer Cook O’Toole, author of the new book Asperkids: An Insider’s Guide to Loving, Understanding and Teaching Children with Asperger Syndrome, made a strong statement on Strollerderby today on the topic of treatment methods which claim to cure autism. Here is a snippet from Jennifer’s statement:
“As the mother of a Make A Wish Kid, I understand to my core what it is to want to ‘cure’ that which diminishes a child’s existence. That same child of mine is also an Asperkid. And there is not one atom of my body that would risk her health — emotional or physical — to ‘fix’ the beautiful, precious, ingenious mind she already has. Why would I? She is not broken.”
