  1. Having worked in a residential setting for many years both as a residential worker and as part of a therapeutic team, I found this book a real gem. Its practical approach is just what is needed when trying to support residential workers to function effectively and to their optimum levels in what are often very difficult and emotionally demanding circumstances. There is just the right amount of theoretical background to support the proposed working practice and most importantly it provides the crucial link between research evidence and what you actually do when working with this client group. Furthermore it tackles the issue of the importance of looking at your own emotions in order to work on and understand you responses in a way that is least likely to evoke a defensive reaction. My one gripe is that I would like to see the training sessions based on the book in action but have not been able to get a response from Chris Taylor about training provision. Guess I’ll have to make some time to develop my own programme!
